Greensleeves Records has partnered with Channel One Soundsystem, known as the “Roots Defenders of Notting Hill Carnival,” to lead an endeavor known as “Down In The Dub Vaults.” The enigmatic selector, Mikey Dread, delved deeply into the archives of Greensleeves, meticulously curating a profound collection of Roots & Dub gems that have been featured on Channel One’s distinctive, handmade sound system over the years.
Esteemed Jamaican vocalists such as the Wailing Souls, Michael Prophet, Linval Thompson, Hugh Mundell, and many others are prominently showcased in this compilation. Additionally, the second disc delves into the Echo Chamber, presenting the Dub counterparts from notable figures like Sly & Robbie, Scientist, Augustus Pablo, and The Rockers All-Stars, among others. This comprehensive selection completes the auditory journey.
In 1979, Mikey Dread and his brother Jah T took over Admiral Bailey, the family sound system, and began performing at Blues dances and Shebeens all across the U.K. During this era, genres like roots, dub, and the emerging sound of rub a dub held sway. Consequently, Mikey renamed the sound system as ‘Channel One,’ inspired by the renowned Jamaican studio located on Maxfield Avenue in Kingston. This studio played a pivotal role in creating many Greensleeves classics of that time, which Mikey has thoughtfully hand-picked for this exclusive compilation. Notably, this marks the first instance of a British sound system participating in a project of this nature since Greensleeves Records released Jah Shaka’s “The Positive Message” in 2010.

Notting Hill Carnival stalwarts since 1983, Channel One have been uplifting the people with their conscious music for decades, breaking down barriers through reggae music. They were the first reggae sound system to bring their sound to Wembley Arena when they competed in the Redbull Culture Clash, emerging as winners after surpassing Goldie’s Metalheadz, Souljazz Soundsystem, and Dubstep heavyweights Skream & Benga. They have been cited as an influence by the new wave of London’s musicians, including Rudimental, Joe Armon-Jones, and Nubya Garcia. Channel One has traveled across the world, often being the first authentic Reggae Soundsystem to perform in various countries, including Australia, Japan, Brazil, India, Gambia, Dubai, Mexico, and the U.S.A. In 2023, their hectic tour schedule shows no signs of slowing down.
