CLOSED: Win 2 Free Tickets to Harder than the Rock: The Cimarons Story at Melkweg Amsterdam.

This new documentary tells the fascinating story of the Cimarons, the first British band to embrace the exciting new sounds from Jamaica. Formed at the end of the 1960s and collaborating with influential Jamaican producers in both reggae and dub, they played a key role in popularizing reggae in the United Kingdom and contributed to the early development of British dub. With an introduction by cultural anthropologist and reggae musician Douwe Dijksterhuis.

Reggae exploded in the 1970s, with the Cimarons at its center. Thousands of miles away from Jamaica, they created excitement, experimentation, and pure anticipation through the speakers, connecting the new generation of Black British youth with their roots and identity. The Cimarons, legends in the music industry and studio musicians at Trojan Records, worked with reggae stars such as Bob Marley, Toots & the Maytals, Jimmy Cliff, and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, and even with Paul McCartney, but they remain vastly underrated when it comes to their own music, impact, and legacy. After losing drummer Maurice Ellis to cancer, the band continues despite decades of exploitation. Harder Than The Rock tells the story of their impressive history and follows the band’s final chapter, as they dream of one more live performance in front of an audience…
