Dub – The Sound of Surprise: A Must-Read on the History of Dub Music

Helmut Philipps’ new book, Dub – The Sound of Surprise, tells the incredible story of how Jamaican dub music changed the world. Released in October 2024, this 256-page hardcover is packed with over 300 illustrations and is presented in a unique 10-inch format, paying tribute to the classic dubplate.

Dub began in Jamaica’s recording studios in the 1970s. Originally a practical solution for reusing music recordings, it quickly became a new art form. Dub took reggae and broke it into pieces, using techniques like reverb, echo, and bass to create something entirely new. Over time, this Jamaican invention spread across the globe, influencing pop charts, clubs, and modern music styles.

Helmut Philipps, an experienced journalist and dub collector, dives deep into this fascinating history. He spoke to key figures behind the music, including legends like Bunny Striker Lee, Pat Kelly, and Style Scott, capturing their final interviews before they passed. His work honors pioneers like King Tubby and Lee Perry, whose innovations shaped the genre.

This expanded English version of Dub – The Sound of Surprise builds on the German edition Dub Konferenz, which won “Best Book of the Year” twice in a row from Riddim magazine readers. With new chapters, updated facts, and insights into dub’s development in Europe, the UK, and the United States, this book is a must-read for reggae and dub fans alike.

A word from Helmut Philipps:
“The reactions to my dub book really surprised me. A reader wrote to me: “I don’t think you realize what you’ve done for us young dubnerds with your work and your knowledge. We love dub and it’s easy to find out how dub goes. But what’s it all about? Why did they do it? You gave us the answer.” I received many invitations from Sound Systems to present my book.”

And somebody said: “You’ve grounded us again.” I’ve now done more than 40 readings in the last 1 ½ years, most of them at Sound Systems as a kind of warm-up before the party starts. The scene is huge without being particularly well known. I’m very grateful for what I experience there. The fact that I am so well-received in this environment means a lot to me. Even though it’s not really about me. It’s all about Jamaica and its cultural legacy.”s”
