Dancehall artiste Mavado is taking his career to a new level with his own label, Mansion Records. Speaking with THE STAR yesterday, the artiste, whose real name is David Brooks, said he will be releasing his first song, Delilah, on the label next week.
He added that he started the label to assist himself and other artistes. “I just start this record label because I have a lot of young artistes around me and I think I can do so much for them,” Mavado said.
In addition to artistes from the Gully Squad, Mavado said he would also be doing work with others like Assassin, Munga and members of the Alliance. He said there was also the possibility that he would be working with some international acts on the label.
“Right now, I have a lot of international connections. It’s a lot of them, so I am not sure who will be first,” he said. But this is also Mavado’s first time trying his hands at producing.
“I will be producing, and we have more things like promoting. It’s a great feeling. It’s a great honour. It’s not about the money, we still haffi inna it (music) and try build it,” Mavado said.
His manager Julian Jones-Griffiths added that Delilah was produced by Mavado and co-produced by Logwood Productions. In addition, he said there were two mixes of the song, one from Stephen McGregor and the other from Jeremy Harding. Both mixes will be released exclusively on iTunes on May 24. He said a few remixes would also be done, with the first one coming from international producer Diplo.
“It’s like two interpretations of the same song. We just wanted to do something different. It’s nothing unusual internationally, it is just something we really don’t do here,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mavado says he will also be doing the music video for Delilah that will be shot by Better Mus’ Come director Storm Saulter in another couple weeks. In addition, he says he will be releasing another song called Do Road and a single with members of the Gully Squad.
