Two soulful voices of Jamaica, Beres Hammond and Sanchez, are coming to the UK to perform together for the very first time. Masters of their art, the ‘Giants Of Reggae Tour 2018’ will be in London (O2 Academy Brixton), Birmingham (O2 Academy) and Manchester (Academy) in August.
Beres Hammond is Jamaica’s greatest singer and songwriter, responsible for a mighty legacy of soulful reggae music. Back with a new single, ‘I’m Alive’ (released 18 May 2018 on VP Records), the single has all the elements of classic Beres production, with smooth harmonies, jazzy instrumentation and poignant lyrics. Over four decades, Beres has poured his smoky sweet voice, an instrument of subtlety and power reminiscent of Otis Redding and Teddy Pendergrass, over every kind of riddim from the funked up reggae jams of 70s fusion band Zap Pow, to the beats of 80s dancehall. It was during the 90s which he blazed a trail of classic hits including ‘Tempted To Touch’, ‘Who Say’, ‘Putting Up Resistance’, ‘Come Back Home’ and ‘Double Trouble’.
Beres’ sophisticated musical taste translates easily across cultural divides, yet the international reggae massive has remained his most loyal fan base. Nowhere is that adoration more apparent than at his riveting concert performances. As he glides through hit after hit, Beres often extends the microphone to the audience who exuberantly sing along.
Sanchez, a true reggae legend, transforms his audience into a mass choir at his live performances. Influenced by the likes of Brook Benton, Sam Cooke and Tom Jones, he epitomizes elegance and style with immaculate attire to match his impeccable performances. His repertoire ranges from soulful R’nB to hardcore dancehall, balanced with religiously calming cuts that enhance the spiritual vibes of his act. Sanchez burst onto the scene in 1988 with the Winston Riley produced ‘Loneliness’, which won him Song of the Year and Singer of the Year at the Rockers Awards and led to his first appearance at Reggae Sunsplash. Since ‘Loneliness’, Sanchez has scored big hits with ‘Wild Sanchez’, ‘Mi Love Mi Lover Bad’ with Flourgan, ‘If I Ever Fall In Love Again’, ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘Missing You’.
