Earlier this month, after Burna Boy’s performance at Summerjam, Cologne, Germany I shared a story about how Burna Boy’s high demands caused disrespect to legendary Steel Pulse. Honestly, I did not foresee that story to grow the size as it did. Call me naive. And also I did not expect the article to be fully drawn out of context the way it was. The article never stated that Burna Boy was disrespectful, hence the title. The article was never meant as hype. But I am glad that now there is, some kind of, an answer from Burna Boy.
During Burna Boy’s recent show in London, the Nigerian musician entertained his fans with classics from his “African Giant” album and also made a statement about the recent situation in Germany. Burna Boy said:
“I don’t even know what they look like, so for them to say I disrespected them they are looking something from Burna Boy’s name like everybody else which I’ve never condoned.” He continued, “Let me pass the message in the right way… i don’t disrespect people, at all, ever… if i disrespect you is because you did something……..”
I can only hope situations like this set an example for the future. In my humble opinion, artists are artists, whether you are just starting or have already reached stardom, keep that ego under control. Make music, not war, and respect each other’s space and art. Most of all, don’t copy an article and change the narrative. World A Reggae is not about hype and tries to always be positive, although critical.
