Since celebrating its independence from British rule on August 6th 1962, Jamaica has grown into a proud nation with a strong identity of its own. Nowhere has this been more apparent than in its music, from the joyous uptempo rhythms of Ska through to the sounds of contemporary Dancehall.
This 5CD set highlights the leading performers, producers and studios that over the past half-century have shaped Jamaica’s national sound, with the 100-plus recordings showcasing a diverse range of musical styles and topics that range from strident proclamations of freedom, hope, pride to songs of love and every day life on the island.
With the majority of the recordings previously unavailable outside Jamaica, this essential collection illustrates the depth of talent that the island has produced over the past 50 years.
Along with the five discs of music, the ‘Trojan Presents Freedom Sounds’ box set also includes a 48-page A5 booklet featuring detailed commentary on the history of Jamaica and its musical heritage, embellished with an array of rare photos and memorabilia. And as an added bonus, a selection of celebratory cards and a Sticker are also included.
This is the true sound of Jamaica, courtesy of those who shaped it and introduced it to the world at large.
