Sailor Jane releases Homage to Sade with Ska Version of “Smooth Operator”

St. Augustine, Florida-born Sailor Jane, in collaboration with horn leader Longineu Parsons and saxophonist Melvin Smith, has reimagined Sade’s timeless classic “Smooth Operator” with a ska beat. This innovative cover maintains a sense of familiarity while introducing a fresh, original interpretation that captivates listeners. The track is part of the upcoming album “No Ordinary Dub, Sade Reimagined,” produced by Sailor Jane and Michael Goldwasser, co-founder of Easy Star Records. This album reinterprets classic Sade songs in various reggae sub-genres.

“Smooth Operator” is the third single from the new album, featuring some of Jamaica’s most renowned musicians alongside Sailor Jane’s smooth, sultry voice. The song evokes the 1960s classic Ska era while blending it with a modern sound, creating a refreshing and enjoyable listening experience. Sailor Jane chose to remake “Smooth Operator” because it perfectly fits the musical architecture of classic reggae rhythms, seamlessly blending the timeless appeal of Sade’s music with the vibrant energy of ska and reggae.
